In my webpage

https://emf.neocities.org/nt/nataltransits.html

I arrived empirically to

td#panel { width: 24em; }

in

https://emf.neocities.org/nt/nataltransits.css

to specify the width of the empty panel in which the output is printed.
I use monospace font and the line of the output is actually 39 ems, not
24. If, however, I specify width: 39em; the panel becomes much wider. I
am programming in Firefox, it checks OK in Chrome, but I am not sure if
it works the same in all other browsers.

There are other ways to specify the width in html and in js (where 39
  bring the expected effect). But why do I need 24em in CSS, and
does it work the same in all browsers?

Thanks,

Eustace
